CREATING A STELLAR SCHOLARSHIP ESSAY

First, abolish the notion that only people with talent can write well. If a person can talk, he/she can write well. Because writing involves more thinking than regular talking, it is important to follow these guidelines during the writing process:

1) Read other scholarship essays.

Reading other winning scholarship essays is the best way to get a feel for what scholarship judges look for. It may also provide ideas during times of writer's block or mental stress. Be careful not to copy other people's words unless you properly quote them in your scholarship essay. This applies to direct quotes, indirect quotes, and paraphrased statements.

2) Use outlines, and brainstorm.

Outlines are a wonderful tool for a writer to gather his thoughts. A traditional outline consists of a Roman numeral identifying the main heading; a capital letter identifying a subheading; and numbers indicating topics under the subheading. You can denote further points related to these topics by using small letters. An informal outline works best for the scholarship essay... what matters is the writer knows what he wants to say before he actually starts saying it.

3) Research rules.

Some scholarship essays seem so easy... so why does a writer still encounter mental roadblocks when writing an essay? This is perfectly natural, even on topics that a writer feels he knows first-hand. To get the brain cells fired up and functioning, sometimes it's helpful to research topics directly and indirectly related to the main topic.

4) Write from the heart for emotional impact.

Don't try to sound like the latest best-selling author in your scholarship essay. This includes trying to sound "deep," (unless of course "deep" is your natural writing style), and littering the essay with big words. Scholarship judges can see through this, and you will turn them off if you try to sound like someone else.

5) Be creative and unique.

Don't be afraid to deviate from the "academic style" of the scholarship essay -- as long as creativity doesn't distract from the main theme, and you are using proper grammar. Remember, scholarship judges are human and they tend to notice essays that tug on their emotional strings in some way. The best scholarship essays usually contain anecdotes, emotional personal accounts and even dialogue. If the scholarship essay instructions allow for creative expression, go wild with it.

6) Use proper grammar, punctuation and style.

Scholarship judges will immediately disqualify scholarship essays with too many grammatical errors, even if the content is compelling. You must know the rules of English grammar, and you should know how to write formally. This means you know how to write a sentence with a traditional structure versus a "contemporary" one (the writer should opt for the former). For example, today's sentence structure makes it somewhat acceptable to use "And" or "But" at the beginning of a sentence, but you should avoid it when writing the scholarship essay. Many editors (especially editors in academia) still feel uncomfortable using a conjunction at the beginning of a sentence, so why even take the chance? A writer can play it safe when choosing to write traditionally.

7) Don't reinvent the wheel - use a standard essay format.

A basic essay format consists of: 1) a thesis statement; 2) three or four paragraphs expanding on points detailed in the thesis statement; and 3) a concluding paragraph. This traditional structure, although seen as generic by some college writers, works very well. Why? Because it allows you to clearly lay out your thoughts during the writing process and for the judges who are reading the essay.

8) Follow the scholarship essay's instructions.

It is important that your scholarship essay address the points asked for in the instructions. No matter how brilliant a particular piece is, if it goes off on a tangent discussing irrelevant topics, then you have not achieved the desired objective.

9) Get someone else to proofread your work.

It is very easy for writers to miss many mistakes, whether they are grammatical errors, typos or inconsistencies in the flow of their piece. It is important to have other sources proofread your material, such as friends, family, and other professors who have reviewed winning scholarship essays. Despite of the popularity of various Black American personalities, poverty is still within the ranks of several Black American families. They can withstand the discrimination that is still present despite of everything that has happened, yet poverty is what they cannot withstand anymore.

ACADEMIC QUESTIONS:

1. How many universities did you apply to?
This is a very basic question, but linked to this is the second question that is shot at you.
2. How many admits or rejections you have received?
As explained in the above question, both of these are interlinked. Now if you applied to 4 were accepted in 1 and got 3 rejects. You don’t have to be Mr. TRUTH. So put it as applied to 4, got 1, awaiting 2, 1 reject or applied to 4, got 1, awaiting 3. (They will have the record of your admits and not of your rejections). But then state as this was supposed to be your first choice anyhow, so even if you would have had the admit letters from any of the other 3, you would certainly have gone for this one.

3. What is the purpose of your trip?
The purpose of my trip is to do my MS in ___________ (E.g.: CS/Telecommunications/EE...whatever or PhD in _____)
4. What is your GRE/TOEFL score?
Always try to speak out the better score first. Like if you have a good TOEFL score, say your TOEFL first and then GRE. Usually people think, they can go and lead them by answering long and sweet, like if asked for scores, the long answer might be : "Sir, I took my Computer based TOEFL and scored 270 at it, while I took the GRE and scored 800 in Quantitative, 710 in Analytical and 430 in Verbal". Well this can heat up the officer. So keep it short. Try always to answer in short and to the point.
5. WHAT TO SAY FOR THE LOW GRE AND TOEFL?
Variety of things makes up the final decision. Always accept your mistakes and explain what exactly went wrong in the examination.

Questions were tough.
Time was not sufficient.
Had a bad day though prepared well.
Written the exam in the middle of the project work or the B Tech examinations.
You think your score is average and on the basis of that the university has given you the admission.
I answered the first few questions incorrectly and I couldn’t improve my score even after performing well later.

Name the university you want the visa for. (The University of your Choice)

FINANCIAL QUESTIONS:

10. Who is planning to sponsor you?
As mentioned in your I-20. If you have a scholarship, say that. Else in case the I-20 says "Family funds" say that, and you may add that sir, my father and my mother are supporting me for my higher education. If your relatives are also sponsoring you then do mention about them as well.
11. Your passbooks show that a large amount of money has recently been deposited. How would you explain that?
If you have borrowed the money here is what you could do Its quite likely that in the past you may have received huge sums of money like selling of some property, retirement of parents etc so u could say something like) In year X we had received Rs. XXX and instead of depositing the amount in a bank at a low interest rate, we invested it in other sources which gave us high interest rates or we gave it to our needy friends. Now we have taken this money back to finance my education. (Of course it’s really dicey to answer this question, but if you are confident you shouldn’t have a problem. If you have some proof of receiving a huge sum of money some years back, make sure you carry it) You can also say that you had private Fixed deposits i.e you invested in private firms coz they provide higher interest rates (say out figures like 16% per annum as compared to the mere 9% of banks. You can show this receipt and say that now you en-cashed that amount, coz you needed it for your educational purposes.
12. What is your father's annual income?
This question often decides your ability to pay for your expenses. They think that money can be put into banks, but annual income is a proof which they heavily rely upon to decide the student's parent’s capability to spend for his educational expenses.
a) What is your father's annual income?
Explain as per the CA report and the IT returns.
b) What is your family's annual income?
The moment the words 'Annual Income" creeps in, state your complete family annual income, i.e. if your mother is also an earning member, if you have agricultural income, if you have rental income plus the interests and dividends...State all of them together. Dont commit the blunder of stating just your father's income. Many a times it hampers your chances. If it seems low to them. Obviously a sum of mother's income, your father's income, agricultural (if u have), rental will be more than a single one. And if they ask for the IT returns, hand over both of your parent's return statements, plus the agricultural papers plus the rental receipt (duplicate) at a time. And if he/she just argues (usually they don’t) that you were asked about your father's income. Then say" Sir, MY family is sponsoring me. Along with my father my mother is also an earning member and an income tax payee. Family funds is what the I-20 states, and so my family including my father and mother (opt brother, if u have one earning) are sponsoring me and here are their statements and proofs of other modes of income.
13. I have been offered a partial scholarship. What financial documents should I show?
Amount mentioned in the I-20 form for 1 year MINUS the scholarship amount should be shown in the form of financial documents. You can show funding for the subsequent year in the form of property or liquid assets. You can also show in written form if the university has intention to give aid for the next year also.
14. Can I show an educational loan as my source of funding?
Yes. You can do so. But if doesn't cover the entire 1 year amount mentioned in the I-20 form then you have to show proof of funding for the remaining amount.

GENERAL QUESTIONS:

15. Why do you plan to do MS?
Say that you felt that higher qualifications give a better place, a better standard in today's competitive world. You felt that you have a good know-how of your field, but a bit more technical knowledge in "the field you are going for MS in" will serve you greatly, when you come back here and join the industry of your choice. You will find more opportunities, higher pay and also the growth prospects are much higher compared to the fresh graduates.
16. Why do you wish to study in the US and not in India?

The courses in the field I am interested in are not being offered or very few institutions offer such courses.
In addition to that the research going on is something I would like to be associated with. (Speak about the facilities as well). Talk about a few researches being conducted in that field. Technical words work out when other things don’t.

Mention about the rank of the university, the student to faculty ratio.
Explain in detail the course curriculum and the concentration that you would take and how good the university is in teaching that particular course.
Talk about the on going research or project carried by the students or the professors of that university. (You can say all these stuff such as rank and all, but you have to state what interested you and it should be something about research or academics. You can also show letters of correspondence with your University professors).

The answers to this vary from person to person. The two basic replies being: Either "YES" or "NO". But I believe that you be truthful at this instance. I have seen many people who have been true and were not affected by that. If your uncle or cousin or distant aunt stays there, you don’t have to say "YES" coz that doesn’t matter. All that matters is your immediate relatives. I.e. own brother, sister, father or mother. They evaluate you on the basis of your merits and not by what the person staying abroad is going to do for you.
19. What are you plans after Graduation?

As soon as a possible supervisor is found, the supervisor, BIGS and the applicant will investigate the possiblities of grants from research projects or teaching assistantships.
Hausdorff Scholarships (PhD grants)

* For a select group of 30 PhD students there are grants of 1100 Euro per month for a maximum of 3 years. Nomination for such a scholarship depends on an outstanding academic record.
* Again for a select group of 8 students there are qualifying grants of 800 Euro per month for a maximum of 1 year. These are scholarships for very promising students who need one more year to start their PhD work.
* NEW! For 5 students there are particular Qualifying scholarships of 800 Euros per month for a period of two years. These scholarships are intended to attract students with an excellent Bachelor degree in mathematics from outside Germany who wish to enter a preparatory phase for our PhD program.
There is the option of completing a regular Master degree in this context, if desired. The courses taken in the preparatory phase - all taught in English - can be applied toward a Master degree. The deadline for these particular two-year scholarships is June 12, 2009.

Thus each year about 10 Hausdorff scholarships and 3 qualifying scholarships can be awarded. As scholarships they are tax free, however, they do not include health insurance or any social benefits.
Family allowance

BIGS can pay a children’s allowance to Hausdorff-Fellows. We will support families with advice and assistance with regards to settling in Bonn, finding day-care and dealing with the administrative issues. The students’ society offers day-care starting from an infant age.
More PhD Grants

There are two sections of BIGS which have - in addition and especially for their topics - grants for PhD students in their sections.

The Section TOPOLOGY is running the Research Training Group (Graduiertenkolleg GRK 1150) "Homotopy and cohomology" which has PhD grants and qualifying grants available.

The Section MODULI SPACES is organized as an International Max Planck Research School (IMPRS) "Moduli spaces" at the Max Planck Institute for Mathematics. This research school offers also grants.
Teaching Assistantships

Teaching assistantships are available from the mathematical institutes. Since teaching is a way of learning, this highly responsible work with students in exercise groups or seminars is very sought after.
Research Positions

Several research projects in Bonn like the Collaborative Research Center (Sonderforschungsbereich SFB 611) "Singular phenomena and scaling in mathematical models" offer research positions.
Individual Scholarships

Many institutions in Germany or in other countries give individual grants to PhD students. For highly gifted students from Germany there is e.g. the Studienstiftung. For foreign students the most important organisation supporting studies in Germany is the Deutscher Akademische Austauschdienst (DAAD - German Academic Exchange Service). It has offices in Cairo, Hanoi, Jakarta, London, Mexico City, Moskow, Nairobi, New Delhi, New York, Paris, Peking, Rio de Janeiro, Tokyo and Warsaw. Australian Development Scholarships (ADS) are a bilateral program within the Australian scholarships program.

Australian Development Scholarships are a highly valued form of development cooperation that aims to contribute to the long term development needs of Australia's partner countries to promote growth and stability. They provide opportunities for people from developing countries to undertake full time undergraduate or postgraduate study in Australia.

Fields of study are targeted to address agreed priority human resource and development needs of recipient countries, in line with Australia's bilateral aid program.

Australian Development Scholarships equip scholars with the skills and knowledge to drive change and influence the development outcomes of their own country through obtaining tertiary qualifications at participating Australian higher education institutions and technical colleges.

Scholarship holders are required to return to their country of citizenship for two years after they have completed their studies to contribute to the development of their country.

Up to 1000 Australian Development Scholarships are awarded each year across 31 countries with scholarships awarded equally between men and women.
Categories of Australian Development Scholarships

There are two categories of Australian Development Scholarships:
Public sector: Applicants are public sector employees who are nominated by their governments for an Australian Development Scholarship award through a competitive selection process. Applicants are required to return to their role in the public service at the completion of their award to strengthen public service capacity in their home country.

Open/equity: Applicants do not need to be nominated by their government or employer. Anyone who meets the selection criteria may apply under this category. Applicants are required to return to their country of citizenship after the completion of their award to contribute to the development of the identified priority sector in their country.
Scholarship benefits

Australian Development Scholarships are offered for the minimum period necessary for the individual to complete the academic program specified by the Australian higher education Institution, including any preparatory training. The following benefits generally apply:

* Return air travel - payment of a single return, economy class airfare to and from Australia, via the most direct route.
* A reunion airfare entitlement of A$1,500 for reunion travel is available to Students who commence their scholarship in 2009 and have no family members accompanying them. Unaccompanied students who commenced their scholarship prior to 2009 may be entitled to a reunion airfare.
* Contribution to initial visa expenses.
* Establishment allowance - a once only payment of A$5,000 as a contribution towards expenses such as rental bonds, text books, study materials, additional medical insurance, home contents insurance, excess baggage etc.
* Full tuition fees.
* Contribution to living expenses - a fortnightly contribution to basic living expenses paid at a rate determined by AusAID. For all students who have received an Offer to start in 2008 the stipend is A$20,007 per annum for Semester 1. The stipend will increase to $23,008 per annum in Semester 2, 2008.
* Introductory Academic Program (IAP) - a compulsory 4-6 week program prior to the commencement of formal academic studies covering information on life and study in Australia. See information on IAPs below.
* Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the duration of the award (for award holder only) - provided to cover the student's basic medical costs.
* Pre-course English (PCE) fees - if deemed necessary PCE may be available for students for in-country and/or in-Australia training.
* Supplementary Academic Support (Tutorial Assistance) - may be available when essential to improve the student's performance to ensure their academic success.
* Fieldwork (for research students only) - may be available for eligible research students for one return economy class airfare via the most direct route to their country of citizenship or within Australia.

Eligibility

Applicants for Australian Development Scholarships must satisfy both the general eligibility criteria and specific criteria established for each country. Applicants will also need to satisfy all requirements of the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship.
General eligibility criteria

Applicants must:

* be a citizen of an ADS participating country [see below]
* not hold Australian or New Zealand citizenship or permanent resident status.
* not married to, a de facto of, or engaged to, a person who holds or is eligible to hold an Australian or New Zealand citizenship or permanent resident status
* not hold or have held an Australian government funded scholarship in the preceding 12 months at the time of application
* satisfy any specific criteria established by the applicant's country and/or government of citizenship
* satisfy the admission requirements of the Institution at which the ADS is to be undertaken
* satisfy all requirements of the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship.

In addition to the above general eligibility criteria, applicants must also meet specific eligibility criteria imposed by the Government of their country of citizenship. Application process

There is usually one annual selection round in each country. Each Country Program has different selection processes and timelines. Conditions of ADS

Applicants who are offered an Australian Development Scholarship will be asked to sign a contract with the Commonwealth of Australia declaring that they will comply with the conditions of the scholarship and the ADS Handbook before the ADS comes into effect. Partner governments may impose their own separate conditions on the scholarship.

The most significant condition relating to the award is that students are required to return to their country of citizenship for at least two years after completing their scholarship, to contribute to the economic and social development of their country. Failure to do so will incur a debt to the Commonwealth of Australia for the total value of the scholarship.

What can I study?

Australian Development Scholarships are available for full-time undergraduate or postgraduate study, from Certificate level to PhD at participating Australian universities and Technical and Further Education (TAFE) institutions.

The number of scholarships and fields of study are determined annually by each ADS participating country and in accordance with the Australian Government's bilateral development assistance program. Some countries may limit the level of study (technical, undergraduate or postgraduate) and give priority to certain fields of study to better meet development needs and Australia's specific aid objectives for each country.
Country specific information is available from the relevant Australian Diplomatic Mission or from the relevant contact link above.
Institution information kits

Once applicants have accepted an ADS offer and signed the contract with the Commonwealth of Australia, the relevant Institution will provide each ADS student with an Institution Information Kit covering pre-departure information.

The pre-departure information provides details on areas such as the Institution and the student's course, reception information, climate details, local childcare and schooling options, long term accommodation, living costs, support services available, public transport options and contact details for the Institution.
Introductory Academic Program

Institutions are required to provide a compulsory Introductory Academic Program (IAP) of between 4-6 weeks duration to all ADS students after their arrival in Australia and prior to the commencement of their formal academic program. The IAP is compulsory and all students must attend. The IAP covers the following areas:

* Living arrangements: study and life in Australia, accommodation options, budgeting and living costs, and assistance available to students facing difficulties adapting to their new environment
* Academic matters: advice about academic and language skills and information about study requirements and options
* Legal requirements and entitlements: information about welfare and health services, social adjustment activities, chaplaincy and prayer rooms, part-time employment services, and relevant State laws
* Student Support Services for international students.

Accommodation

Institutions participating in the ADS scheme are required to meet new ADS students at the airport on arrival and take them to their initial accommodation. Institutions are also responsible for arranging accommodation for students and where relevant their families for the first seven days they are in Australia. Students are responsible for the cost of this accommodation, but institutions will try to find accommodation that is reasonably priced, with appropriate furniture and facilities. Students are responsible for finding and paying for their own long-term accommodation.
Information regarding dependants

Students wishing to bring family members to Australia must contact the Australian Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) directly to ascertain the current requirements for family entry. More information about DIAC's entry requirements and the visa process are available from the DIAC website [external website]. ADS students will be required to ensure all their dependants have medical insurance in place for the period they will reside in Australia prior to their departure from their country of citizenship.

Students who bring family members to Australia are entirely responsible for their welfare, including all costs associated with visas, travel, medical, living, and schooling if applicable.

MBA Scholarships provided by the Republic of Cyprus for the academic year 2009-2010

The Republic of Cyprus is offering five (5) full scholarships of 12-months duration to study for the attainment of the University of Nicosia Master in Business Administration Programme for the academic year 2009-2010. Eligible candidates are citizens of Bangladesh, Indonesia, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.

Application Procedure
In order to submit an application for scholarship, the applicant must attain an official endorsement by his/her country`s Ministry of Foreign Affairs by completing the Endorsement Form, which must be submitted along with the application form (detailed instructions on the endorsement procedure are included in the endorsement form). The applicants must then submit their applications along with the endorsement form at a Competent Consular Authority of the Republic of Cyprus of their choice.

The deadline for the submission of applications is June 30, 2009.

In order to expedite the process, it is strongly recommended that the applicant forwards a copy of the stamped and endorsed application to the University of Nicosia, as soon as he/she attains the stamp and endorsement by the official government authority (as instructed above). ENDEAVOUR AWARDS

The Endeavour Program aims to strengthen bilateral ties between Australia and participating countries; showcase Australia's education sector to the world; strengthen mutual understanding between the people of participating countries; further develop Award holders' knowledge and skills in their field of study, and create/strengthen linkages between Australian higher education institutions and institutions in participating countries.

International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (IPRS)

The International Postgraduate Research Scholarships (IPRS) are available for study leading to the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy or to a Master of Philosophy and are funded by the Commonwealth Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research (DIISR). Because competition for the scholarships is intense, at ANU they are not awarded for study at the Master degree level. Successful applicants will study in areas in which the University has shown a particular research concentration.

The Zinkernagel Scholarship is in honour of Professor Rolf Zinkernagel, who shared the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine with Professor Peter Doherty in 1996 for work done in the JCSMR. One Zinkernagel Scholarship will be awarded annually to the highest ranked successful JCSMR, (College of Medicine and Health Sciences) applicant for an Endeavour International Postgraduate Research Scholarship (EIPRS).

Robert S. McNamara Fellowships Program logo

The Robert S. McNamara Fellowships Program provides support to young researchers working in academic and research institutions from eligible countries preparing a doctoral thesis. Research grants cover residence costs for a 5 to 10 month period in a renowned university or research center. Fellows are expected to advance their research work mainly by using the facilities and resources provided by the host institution and by interacting with peers.

Who Can Apply?

Only lecturers and researchers from eligible countries working on their doctoral thesis can apply for the fellowship. Candidates should be under 45 years, and have completed any course work or exams required for their doctoral program.

What Does the Program Support?

The purpose of the grant is to help fellows advance their doctoral research work through a residency period of five to ten months in a host institution in a country other than their home country or country of residence. During the research period at the host institution, the fellows are expected to have access to essential resources such as reference books and research publications, databases, and software; attend seminars and eventually courses; and to benefit by interacting with peers.

Host Institution

Candidates should be accepted or invited by a host institution which would designate an academic advisor to assist the fellow during his research period. Host institutions should also commit to provide the fellow with basic amenities such as office space and access to a computer, and to facilitate his/her research activities.

Fields of Research

Candidate's field of research should be related to development at the master's level, in fields such as economics, health, education, agriculture, environment, natural resource management, or other development‑related subject.

Fellowships Award

Eligible candidates are evaluated by external reviewers based on three criteria: academic performance, teaching and research experience, and relevance of the proposed research program. The top candidates are submitted to the Selection Committee, which includes World Bank senior experts and Donors representatives, for final selection. In addition to the merit criteria, the Selection Committee takes into account other factors such as availability of budget, geographical diversity and gender balance.

Grants

Candidates are requested to submit a budget for their fellowship covering the costs related to their research program: travel; insurance and living expenses; fees for courses and participation to seminars; and a books and software allowance. The grant amount to be awarded to each fellow will be decided by the Selection Committee. The maximum amount of the grant is US$ 25,000.

Fellow’s Commitment

Fellows are required to issue two reports, a mid-term report during the fellowship period and a final report containing the results of the research. The results of the McNamara fellows research work may be considered for publication by the World Bank. Fellows are expected to return to their home countries and resume their academic or research position upon completion of the fellowship. They are also expected to mention the McNamara fellowship award in any publication related to their doctoral research work, including their thesis, and to provide the Program with a copy of their thesis upon graduation.

What Do I Have To Do To Get Your Money, Mr. Journyx?

It's really pretty simple. We want you to write an essay of 1,000 words or fewer, on one of these two topics:

* Describe a real situation that you've encountered where project oriented time tracking has made a positive difference in the world.

The author of the best essay, as chosen by our panel of judges, will be awarded $500 USD towards his or her tuition and fees.

U.S. Master’s Degree in Public Administration, Public Management, and Public Policy for Legislative Strengthening

Program Description:

* Master’s Degree in the US on topics sucha as Public Administration, Public Management, and Public Policy
* The objective of the training is to enhance the capacity of the participant in public administration education, communication, analysis, and decision-making. After the training it is expected that the graduate will have an understanding of theories of management and the public context in which public administrators work. She/he will be able to apply those theories to improve the performance of the Parliament Secretariat and collaborate with others to best serve the public interest.

Target Participants:

* Candidates must be university graduates currently working at the Parliament Secretariat.
* Candidates must have five years experience at the Parliament Secretariat and be committed to stay with the institution upon return.
* Candidates must be nominated by the Head of the Secretariat General of the Parliament.

Program Description:

* The program will provide opportunities for local government officials from the strategic and marginalized regions of Aceh and Papua to improve their skills in public management through long-term study and attainment of master’s degrees in public administration, local government management, or similar fields.
* Participants will attend well established university programs with high academic standards. One example is the Postgraduate Program in Local Politics and Regional Autonomy at Gajah Mada University.

* University graduates who have demonstrated a commitment to government service at the regional level.
* Candidates who intend to pursue a career in regional government service as demonstrated through current employment in government, prior coursework in public administration or similar topics, volunteer activities, involvement in community organization or relevant NGO work, etc.

* The objective of the training is to strengthen the capacity of participants to engage in effective human rights education, monitoring, and advocacy activities. Through the training it is expected that the participants can participate more effectively in human rights debates, challenge discriminatory attitudes and practices and to advance important policy and legislative reforms to enhance human rights protection.

Target Participants:

* Candidates must be university graduates in social science or law who are currently staff of the Human Rights National Committee or the Ministry of Law and Human Rights.
* Candidates must have knowledge and experience in the area of human rights
* Candidates must have shown leadership ability and commitment to stay with the institution upon return.

Program Description:

* Short term course up to 4 weeks in the U.S. on topics such as peace building; conflict resolution; peace journalism; conflict management and mitigation and other topics important in supporting peacebuilding efforts in Indonesia.
* The objective of this program is to support NGOs/university staff or individuals who actively work in conflict, conflict prone or post-conflict areas in Indonesia, with up to date knowledge about the theory and best practices to engage on conflict resolution and peace building efforts.

Target Participants:

* Representatives from universities, NGOs, and journalists that are actively dealing with conflict. The candidates from potentially conflict/post-conflict areas in Indonesia such as NAD, Central Sulawesi, Maluku and Papua will be prioritized. Priority will also be given to NGO that are/were beneficiaries of USG-funded conflict reconciliation programs.

They will learn how to analyze conflict and how to uncover the philosophical and actual underpinnings of conflicts of all kinds, as well as how to defuse situations that arise between individuals and between organizations, communities and other groupings in order to develop a sustainable internal capacity for building peace and resolving conflict.

* Representatives from universities, NGOs, and other related organizations and journalists who are actively dealing with conflict.

Opportunity Initiative Grants

During a recent visit to the Jakarta Office of AMINEF’s EducationUSA office Dorothy Mora the Program Officer for East Asia Pacific Educational Information and Resources Branch of ECA met and presented the first 3 Opportunity Grants Initiative Awards to grantees. The awards are designed to assist students who wish to study in the USA in taking the first steps in that process. Awards are quite flexible and include but are not limited to, awards for important components of the process such as TOEFL or GRE preparation and testing, translation of documents, application fees to the US institutions, grants for airfare to testing sites and accommodations while at the site, and even possible assistance with supplementing tuition costs. The first 4 successful grantees are:

1. Fajar Arianto
He will receive grants for TOEFL preparation, and the iBT test. He graduated from Gadjah Mada with GPA of 3.57 in political science, he is in the process of school selection and would like to pursue and MBA or a Masters in International Relations.

2. Josua Pardede
He will receive the iBT test fee. Josua graduated from the University of Indonesia in Engineering with a GPA of 3.05. He would like to pursue a Masters in economics and is now in the process of selecting a school. He is preparing for the test and looking for any possible financial aid.

3. Elizabeth Juliane Latief
She will receive a grant for the TOEFL test. She graduated from Universitas Atmajaya majoring in management with the GPA 3.42. She is in the process of school selection and studying for test preparation.

4. Elis Supriati
She will receive a grant for TOEFL preparation and the testing fee. Elis has graduated from Universitas Muhammadiyah Jakarta majoring in public health with a GPA of 3.31. She would like to pursue an Masters Program in public health.

Loans, Fellowships & Scholarships for Students Studying Abroad

For the Indian student planning to study abroad, there are various sources to consider for financial aid apart from your/parents' savings. The following are some of the major alternative options for financial assistance:

Bank Loans: Several banks such as Bank of India, Andhra Bank, Canara Bank, State Bank of India, Axis Bank, HSBC Bank, Indian Bank etc. are offering education loans for the students willing to study abroad. Based on the loan amount, certain percentage of security (such as NSE shares, house mortgage etc.) is required and interest is charged accordingly. The interest rates would generally not exceed the Prime Lending Rates (PLR). Certain banks also accept a third party guarantee instead of security. To avail of bank loans, the candidate needs to fulfill certain conditions such as they must be an Indian resident, confirmation of admission and requirement of minimum annual income. The repayment of loan generally starts after six months of course completion or one-month of job (if employed immediately after course completion) and the entire amount has to be repaid in 5 to 7 years (from the first payment).

Trust Loans: Trust loans are either interest-free or charge a lower interest rate (2 to 4 %). The loan amount is variable and is usually up to Rs. 1.5 lacs. However, they generally have a deadline by which you must submit the loan application forms. The following are some of the renowned trusts in India: • J.N. Tata Endowment (soft loans between Rs. 50,000 and Rs.1.5 lacs), • Sahu Jain Trust, Mariwala Trust, • K.C. Mahindra Education Trust and • R.D. Sethna Scholarship Fund.

Fellowships: Fellowships are comparatively difficult to acquire due to stiff competition. The popular ones are- • Inlaks Scholarships • Aga Khan Foundation • Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarships and • AT & T Leadership Awards (only for U.S.) Despite of the above sources, students can also acquire financial support from the University Funding - Scholarship/Fellowships/Assistantships, U.S. Banks Student Loans (for US) and other sources.

Support From The Universities: Students have to consider that most universities provide financial aid to international students on merit and not on need. It is easier to avail monetary assistance for graduate programs than undergraduate courses. The aid amount varies for different universities and fields of specialization. Also note that it is easier to receive financial assistance from U.S. and U.K. universities than those in Australia, New Zealand or Canada.

For Undergraduate Students: In case of undergraduates, Aid forms from the institute as well as the Foreign Student's Financial Aid Form has to be submitted along with a bank statement. Forms may ask details about your personal and total (family) annual income, average living expenses, asset details etc.

For Postgraduate Students: Postgraduate students must mention about financial aid requirement in their application forms. Meritorious students receive financial assistance most commonly in the form of tuition waivers, scholarship or fellowship and assistantships (a cash stipend to take care of their expenses and in return they work for certain hours a week- either teaching or research based).

Evaluating thousands of scholarship applications has definitely left an impression on me. I still remember some of them, because the students who submitted them managed to get into my head in a personal way.

Many books and articles will tell you that "personalization" is good, but they don't tell you how to accomplish that. I saw a photo attached to an app showing the senior student shaking hands with the President of the United States. Another enclosed an audio tape that revealed his talent to play the fiddle in a country band. A girl had her photograph taken with a well-known professional golfer after she had won a state tournament. A boy included a picture of his debating trophies. Another had won a two day fishing tournament and held the trophy in a picture to prove it. Another had built his own computer. Still, another had patented her own invention, a device for counting inventory units. In each case the items were part of the requirements of the scholarship award, not just thrown in for effect. These are super examples of "personalizing" a scholarship application, but it doesn't have to be that noticeable.

There were also attempts at personalization not well received, a picture of a girl in a very tiny bikini. The word thong comes to mind. Another included prize ribbons with a request to return them when the judging was over. We had to send them back at our own expense! Another application had an algebra homework assignment inside, oops. We sent that back, too. Her siblings were probably blamed for its disappearance. One application had a Santa Claus hat inside. It came from Alaska. I'm still trying to figure that one out.

Why is personalization so important? Imagine that you are on the committee, sitting around a table with 247 scholarship forms. It is the committee’s job to pick a winner. All of the apps appear to look alike. All things being equal, which one is going to be chosen? It’s impossible to say. But, let’s suppose that one personalized his/her request and made it stand out positively from the rest. Now, someone has taken the time to be bold, inventive and creative. They have made it possible for the scholarship committee to know more about who they are. They are more than a just a piece of paper with a name on it. They have revealed intimate sides to their personalities. Who will win now? The choice is obvious.

Personalize don't dramatize. Use good judgment and common sense when personalizing. Try to imagine who the people are making up the committee. Then, send in your request knowing that, out of all who sent their forms, you are the one who will win. You are the person who deserves the money.

285 Philadelphia Schools’ Students Awarded $800,000 in Scholarships

The Philadelphia Education Fund has been in operation for 20 years. A nonprofit organization, the Fund partners with school districts (including the Philadelphia schools), other nonprofit organizations, businesses and individuals to provide scholarships for students in the Philadelphia schools system. Its purpose is to initiate and implement innovative educational programs, of which they have several. They work to improve the quality of teachers in the Philadelphia schools, conduct educational research, and engage the community in school reform. The Fund is one of the largest of 86 education funds that are affiliated with the national Public Education Network.

One of the programs that are sponsored by the Fund is the Philadelphia Scholars Program that awards Last Dollar Scholarships to Philadelphia schools students. In June 2006, they awarded $800,000 in scholarships to 285 schools students.

Over the last 16 years, the Fund has awarded more than $5 million to students, who attend 15 high schools of the Philadelphia schools system — many of these youth were the first in their families to attend college. Scholarships range from $200 to $4,000, helping to fill the gap between a student’s financial aid package and actual college costs. Scholarships cover tuition, fees, books and transportation. They are renewable for a maximum of six years for students attending accredited, degree-granting colleges and universities across the nation.

Scholarship funding is from Philadelphia donors (many of which are the city’s most prominent philanthropists in the financial industry), but includes hundreds of individuals, businesses, and organizations. The most active donor is John C. Bogle, chairman of the National Constitution Center and former chairman and founder of the Vanguard Group. Besides wanting to make college a reality for Philadelphia schools students, Bogle hopes that these same children will one day invest in Philadelphia’s next generation.

Once such group, which raises funds for the Last Dollar Scholarship program, is the Scholars Advisory Committee. To date, they have raised $16 million. A. Morris Williams, Jr. chairs the committee, is the president of Williams and Company, and was formerly an executive of Morgan Stanley. He and John Neff, a committee member and former managing partner of Wellington Management Company, are the two driving forces behind the Philadelphia Scholars Program. Together, they provided the seed money for the program’s launch.

Williams wants to help the Philadelphia schools students reach their goals, hoping to inspire others to support higher education in Philadelphia. Neff wants to give something back to the community that has been so good to him, and sees supporting education as a way to give students an opportunity for a better life.
